(Solved) - Windows 7 BOOTMGR is missing problems

(15 posts)

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Gateway laptop, and its battery died during a full system restore to factory defaults. When I got it plugged in and back on, it just said 'BootMGR is missing Press ctrl+alt+del to restart' I found the article https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/ and tried to follow it with a recovery disk i made from NeoSmart. It booted with the disk to the 'system recovery options,' skipping the choosing a language, time&currency, and keyboard settings screens, and it wouldn't show any OS, nor could I find any manually. I've looked through the comments on that page, but I am far from computer savvy and haven't understood much of it to even see if it would work.
Can anyone help me with a step by step process?

As I understand it your system did not completely install. And you were doing it from a manufacturer built in recovery partition? You can no longer access the recovery partition to redo the job?

You will want to download the appropriate ISO file for the version and bit configuration which matches the Product Key on the bottom of your computer. Then using ImgBurn burn the .iso file to DVD. Boot from it and install the system anew.

Thank you for the advice. Downloading the file is taking quite a long time, but I'm try it now. A question, though: how much of an effect would this whole mess have on my computer's personal files like pictures and documents?

I assumed since you said above that you were in the process of doing a full system restore to factory defaults that your data and pictures were already wiped.

I'm not sure what state those files are in currently, and my main concern is to get my computer up and running again. However, if the it is possible for those to be there it would be nice. Before my computer had shut off it should have backed up those files on a disk, but I checked the disk with another computer and it said it was empty.

I have tried all of the above and my 3 month old Laptop will not boot from the recovery CD. Any advice would be appreciated

@wiseman5236: Welcome to our Happy Band! You must start a new topic in order to get answers to your specific problem.

A little late but why did you attempt a restore on a battery? Your hdd is doing a lot of work and is the biggest drain on your battery.

Thanks so much for the help! I'm burning the OS now. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to salvage from my computer, but as long as I can get it going again, I'll be happy.

I'm not sure what you mean by a restore on the battery. How might I do this?

He means why did you try a system restore on battery power instead of plugged in to household power.

Ah, it was a lapse in proper jugdment, but, as he said, too late to have prevented now. Murphy's law.

When I burn the ISO onto a disk with imgburn, it gets to 99% and then stops working.

Some times patience is necessary. The green bar thingy is not always correct. If no joy then try another computer to make the iso.

On ImgBurn, 99% of the burn will take about 12 minutes, but then the write rate will drop to 0, the time remaining becomes unknown, and the disk begins to spin so fast that I hear it buzzing. Also, nothing new appears in the log. This hasn't happened with any other files I've tried to burn to disk with ImgBurn. Are you sure I need to be more patient with it? The only other computer in our household is a Mac, which I wouldn't know what to do with.

I was overreacting a bit. I tried disk to install the OS and it worked wonderfully! Thank you so much for solving my problem! I am very grateful!
